Florida

Delfina Perez Chilel was a 41-year-old mother of two who was remembered by her younger sister as an amazing mother, daughter, sister, wife, and friend. Her family remembered the smile she shared with everyone she met and described feeling immediately lost without her. Delfina’s two children were central to her life, and following her death, her sister took responsibility for helping raise them alongside her own children.

Delfina was a mother of two children, ages 8 and 9, and was expecting another child when she died. Her family described her as an amazing mother, daughter, sister, wife, and friend and remembered the smile she shared with everyone she met. Following her death, her younger sister began caring for Delfina’s two children and organized a fundraiser to return Delfina’s remains to Guatemala for burial.

THE RECORD

On November 15, 2024, concern arose when Delfina failed to arrive at her children’s daycare for pickup, something described as highly unusual for her. After daycare staff contacted police and a relative reported concerns about the parents’ history of domestic disputes and prior threats, Hallandale Beach officers entered the family’s home. Delfina, who was approximately 20 weeks pregnant, was found with severe stab wounds and pronounced dead at the scene. Victor Chavez, the father of her children, was found unresponsive in another room and transported to a hospital. According to police, Chavez subsequently confessed to killing Delfina and attempting suicide. He was arrested on two counts of second-degree murder, reflecting Delfina’s death and the death of her unborn child.

LEGAL / SYSTEM RESPONSE

There was substantial documented law-enforcement involvement involving Victor Chavez before Delfina’s homicide. Court records reviewed by Local 10 showed that Chavez had been arrested three previous times for domestic violence-related incidents.

In 2017, Chavez was accused of beating Delfina during an incident reportedly triggered by jealousy involving a former girlfriend. In 2015, he was arrested after allegedly assaulting his pregnant partner with a seven-inch knife; the victim’s identity was redacted in court filings, although reporting noted circumstances suggesting the victim may have been Delfina. In 2014, Chavez was arrested on battery and disorderly conduct charges after allegedly attacking a woman identified as “Lyliana Perez” during an incident involving suspected infidelity; reporting noted that Delfina was known as “Lily.”

The charges in each of those prior cases were ultimately dropped.

Immediately before officers entered the home in November 2024, a relative informed police about the parents’ history of domestic disputes, concerns regarding Chavez, and prior threats. INFORMATION LIMITATIONS

Available reporting establishes a significant history of domestic violence-related system contact involving Chavez and confirms at least one prior alleged assault involving Delfina. However, redacted victim information in some earlier records limits the ability to conclusively attribute every prior incident to Delfina. The sources also reference prior threats without specifying their exact content. Accordingly, specific indicators such as threats to kill, coercive control, separation, and protective-order history remain unknown unless additional records provide direct documentation.

TRANSPARENCY / RECORD NOTE

Public court records document multiple domestic violence-related arrests involving Victor Chavez before Delfina’s death. Some earlier records contain redacted or variant victim names, so those incidents should not all be represented as definitively involving Delfina unless independently confirmed. Charges arising from the earlier domestic violence arrests were reportedly dropped. Chavez’s current murder charges are allegations unless and until resolved through the criminal court process.
