Deputy Abigail Rose Bieber "Abby"

30 YEARS OLD ·

Saint Augustine,

Florida

Abigail “Abby” Rose Bieber was 30 years old, a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy, an avid runner, a baker, and a deeply devoted public servant. Abby built meaningful connections throughout her community and was working toward her dream of becoming a detective specializing in crimes against children. Outside of work, she cherished trips to the Dunedin Causeway with her mother, loved baking treats for her family, and shared her life with her beloved dog, Louey.

Born March 14, 1991, in Washington, D.C., Abby moved from Bethesda, Maryland, to Florida in 2016. She served Hillsborough County for four years as a sheriff's deputy, primarily in patrol, while also completing undercover assignments and working with children through the Boys & Girls Club. Shortly before her death, Abby had been approved to join HCSO's Street Crimes Unit, a step toward her goal of becoming a Special Victims detective focused on crimes against children. Abby was an avid runner, enjoyed visiting the Dunedin Causeway with her mother, and loved baking and sharing what she made with her family.

THE RECORD

On January 29, 2022, Abigail was vacationing in St. Augustine with her boyfriend, HCSO Detective Daniel Leyden, and other off-duty deputies. Witnesses reported hearing Abigail and Leyden arguing inside a bedroom before gunshots were fired. Investigators determined that Leyden fatally shot Abigail before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

RELATIONSHIP CONTEXT

Boyfriend

Abigail and Leyden were coworkers at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and were in a romantic relationship. Abigail's father later stated that she intended to end the relationship during the St. Augustine trip. During the fatal incident, a witness reported hearing Abigail tell Leyden to put a gun down and say that she could not get to the bedroom door shortly before gunshots were fired.

LEGAL / SYSTEM RESPONSE

Abigail and Leyden were both employees of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Following Abigail's death, allegations emerged that Leyden had been accused of violent or threatening behavior involving other women years before the homicide. In 2026, Abigail's father, acting on behalf of her estate, brought civil claims against the Hillsborough County Sheriff alleging that the agency had inadequately handled and concealed prior complaints involving Leyden. The Sheriff's Office has contested the claims. In September 2026, a federal judge dismissed some federal claims, allowed other issues to proceed, and remanded the remaining case to state court. The civil litigation remains separate from the criminal determination that Leyden killed Abigail before taking his own life.
