Florida
Heather Nicole Sheppard was a 43-year-old mother of three who was remembered by her daughter as loving, caring, and always willing to help others. Heather made a point of telling the people in her life that she loved them, whether she was leaving or simply ending a phone call. Her daughter remembered her smile, her love for her children and the beach, and the care she showed to those around her
Heather was born December 4, 1979, in Gadsden, Alabama. Heather was a mother of three and a small-business owner. Her daughter Samantha remembered Heather as a good person and described the close bond they shared. Heather’s obituary further documents her love of nature and animals, especially butterflies and dolphins, and her enjoyment of the beach, collecting shark teeth, and finding beautiful shells. Together, her family’s remembrance and obituary preserve a fuller picture of Heather beyond the homicide.
THE RECORD
Heather Sheppard was reported missing on July 3, 2023, after her daughter became concerned when she could not reach her. Heather had recently been staying at a Jacksonville home with her girlfriend, Shannon McCarthy. On July 5, JSO detectives searching the property discovered Heather’s body concealed beneath a tarp on the front porch. An autopsy determined she had been shot multiple times. Investigators recovered multiple firearms, and FDLE analysis matched projectiles recovered from Heather to McCarthy’s gun. McCarthy later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and written threats to kill or do bodily injury and was sentenced to 30 years in Florida State Prison.

INFORMATION LIMITATIONS
Available reporting documents significant prior IPV and system contact but does not establish every aspect of Heather and McCarthy’s relationship history. Indicators without supporting documentation remain classified as unknown rather than absent.
TRANSPARENCY / RECORD NOTE
Heather’s case resulted in a criminal conviction through a negotiated guilty plea. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigated the homicide, FDLE conducted firearm analysis, and the Office of the State Attorney for Florida’s Fourth Judicial Circuit prosecuted the case.
