Johana was born in Honduras and later made her home in Collier County, Florida. She owned a hair salon on Radio Road and, shortly before her death, was beginning to redecorate the salon and move the business under her own direction. A hairstylist who worked with her described the changes as Johana beginning to realize her dream and remembered her as “a really wonderful person.” A client and friend of approximately ten years remembered Johana as a happy, Christian woman who was frequently present at events involving her sons. Friends gathered at Golden Gate Community Park after her death to remember Johana and her 18-year-old son, Joseph Suazo.

RELATIONSHIP CONTEXT

Husband

Johana Nunez and Jose Wilfredo Suazo married in Collier County in 2008 after reportedly being together for approximately 13 years. Public records and contemporary reporting document repeated domestic violence and family-system involvement before Johana’s death. In 2007, Jose was arrested after allegedly slapping Johana and pushing her into a wall, causing a glass picture frame to break against her back; the case was later dropped. A pastor who knew the family said Johana and her son Joseph had confided in him about Jose’s abuse and described Jose as controlling toward Johana. The pastor also reported that Johana had previously taken her children to a shelter before returning after Jose promised to change his behavior.

LEGAL / SYSTEM RESPONSE

The family had repeated contact with law enforcement and the Florida Department of Children and Families before the homicides. Jose Suazo was arrested for domestic violence battery involving Johana in 2007, although the case was later dropped. DCF and law enforcement subsequently investigated incidents involving Joseph in 2011 and 2012, including allegations of physical violence and threats to kill Joseph and the rest of the family. In 2012, Joseph told investigators that he feared his father would kill him or his family. No further action was taken following that investigation. Additional law-enforcement contacts occurred in December 2012 and February 2013; during the latter, Joseph reported that his father pointed a handgun at his legs and fired a round inside a vehicle. No arrest was made because authorities reported insufficient probable cause. After Johana and Joseph were killed, Jose was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder. He later died while awaiting trial, and the homicide charges were therefore never adjudicated.

INFORMATION LIMITATIONS

Fields marked UNKNOWN were not established by the available coded record and do not mean the behavior did not occur.

TRANSPARENCY / RECORD NOTE

Available records document multiple reports of domestic violence and threats within the family before the homicides. A pastor who had worked with the family for years told reporters that Jose had repeatedly threatened to kill Johana and Joseph and that Johana had previously taken her children to a shelter. The same pastor described Jose as controlling toward Johana. These descriptions are attributed to the pastor and should not be treated as independent court findings. Earlier allegations resulted in law-enforcement and DCF involvement, but several investigations ended without further action or prosecution.
