REMEMBER Veronica

Veronica Marie Brown

20 YEARS OLD ·

Jacksonville,

Florida

Veronica Marie Brown was a 20-year-old Jacksonville mother remembered by her family as goofy, funny, silly, loving, and wonderful to be around. Her family remembered singing and dancing with her and especially remembered her smile. Veronica was straightforward but also sweet and caring. She was killed only weeks before her daughter Coraline’s first birthday.

Veronica was born on February 26, 2003, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Kari Lynn Reyes and Orlando Manuel Reyes. Her obituary states that her life “took a drastic turn” when she was 16 and that she never made it back home, but it does not provide additional details about those circumstances.

Veronica became a mother when her daughter, Coraline Marie Brown, was born on November 24, 2022. Her family said Coraline looked just like her mother. Veronica was survived by Coraline; her mother, Kari Lynn Reyes; father, Orlando Manuel Reyes; stepfather, Anthony Curcio; brothers Lance Edwin Clark and Xavier Lee Curcio; and sister Kira Lynn Curcio.

THE RECORD

On November 4, 2023, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers responded to the North Pearl Street area following reports of a battery with injuries. Officers found 20-year-old Veronica Brown unresponsive outside a residence. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

Investigators interviewed witnesses and subsequently identified Corey Rahim Martin as the suspect in Veronica’s death. Martin was later taken into custody on unrelated outstanding matters. While he remained incarcerated, investigators obtained a warrant charging him with Veronica’s murder.

RELATIONSHIP CONTEXT

Intimate partner / dating relationship

Corey Rahim Martin was identified as Veronica’s intimate partner in reporting surrounding her homicide. Available reporting documents a history of domestic-violence arrests involving Martin and other women. Martin had reportedly been arrested multiple times for domestic battery over several years, and some women involved in those previous cases obtained injunctions for protection.

Available sources do not establish that Veronica was the victim in Martin’s previous domestic-violence cases. Those incidents therefore document Martin’s prior perpetrator history but do not establish prior IPV against Veronica.

PATTERNS DOCUMENTED IN AVAILABLE RECORDS

PRIOR SYSTEM CONTACT

These indicators reflect what could be established from available sources. Absence from this list does not establish that a behavior did not occur.

LEGAL / SYSTEM RESPONSE

Martin had a documented criminal history before Veronica’s death, including multiple reported arrests for domestic battery involving other women. Available reporting states that some previous women involved in those cases obtained protective injunctions against him. The records currently reviewed do not establish that those earlier cases involved Veronica.

Martin was arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on April 10, 2024, in connection with separate criminal matters. His jail record lists charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance while armed, trespassing, resisting an officer without violence, and loitering or prowling.

INFORMATION LIMITATIONS

Available sources establish Veronica’s identity and remembrance information, her motherhood, the circumstances surrounding her death, Martin’s subsequent prosecution, his adjudication of guilt for second-degree murder, and his previous domestic-violence-related system history involving other women. They do not provide sufficient evidence about Veronica and Martin’s relationship before her death to establish prior IPV against Veronica, separation, a protective order involving Veronica, strangulation, stalking, threats to kill, coercive control, escalating violence, weapon threats, threats involving others, or self-harm/suicide threats. The specific mechanism of Veronica’s fatal injuries is also not established in the sources reviewed.

TRANSPARENCY / RECORD NOTE

Current Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office records show that Corey Rahim Martin has been adjudicated guilty of second-degree murder in case 2023669129. Martin also had documented criminal and domestic-violence-related system contact before being charged with Veronica’s murder, including multiple reported domestic-battery arrests involving other women. Because available records do not establish that Veronica was the victim in those previous incidents, they are not used to code Prior IPV or Protective Order as documented for Veronica.

Martin’s other current criminal charges arise from separate cases and should not be represented as part of Veronica’s homicide case.
