I’M THINKING ABOUT LEAVING

Safety-planning resources and professional support. Leaving or separation can require individualized planning; this site does not prescribe a universal exit strategy.

Thinking about leaving can bring relief, fear, uncertainty, or all of these at once. You may be considering ending the relationship, moving out, asking the other person to leave, or simply trying to understand what separation could look like.

You do not have to make that decision today. If you are considering leaving an abusive or controlling relationship, an advocate can help you think through your circumstances, safety concerns, practical needs, and available options without deciding for you.

IMPORTANT CONTEXT

Leaving is not a one-size-fits-all safety strategy. Research has identified separation as an important risk context in some cases of intimate partner violence, particularly when other high-risk behaviors are present. This does not mean that leaving will cause violence or that staying is safer. It means that individualized planning matters. If you are concerned about how a partner may respond to separation, consider speaking confidentially with a domestic violence advocate before making changes when it is safe and possible to do so.
