I’M WORRIED ABOUT SOMEONE
Guidance for listening, supporting without judgment, avoiding confrontation that could increase danger, and connecting someone with professional resources.
Watching someone you care about experience a frightening, controlling, or abusive relationship can leave you unsure of what to say or do. You may see concerning behavior before the person you care about identifies it as abuse—or they may already know what is happening and feel unable or unready to change their situation.
You can support someone without forcing them to make a particular decision. Listening, believing them, respecting their autonomy, and helping them connect with professional support can matter.
IMPORTANT CONTEXT
Helping does not require confronting the person causing harm. Direct confrontation, ultimatums, or actions taken without the survivor’s knowledge can sometimes create additional risk. When possible, follow the survivor’s lead and consider speaking with a domestic violence advocate yourself. Advocates can also help friends and family think through how to support someone safely.
